Spring is in the air! There’s no better time to take up an artistic hobby! But choosing the right products and equipment can be overwhelming. There are so many options available, and everything looks so good.
Whether you’re buying for yourself, or as a gift, at SBS we have a range of art supplies to suit any budget. Plus, we’re always on hand to help advise you about the best products to suit your needs. Here are a few ideas to help you get started.
Watercolour pencils and a sketch pad
One of the easiest ways to start an art habit is with watercolour. It is much more forgiving than other types of art, requires less equipment and is a lot easier to learn. Watercolour pencils and a simple sketch pad are a great start.
Winsor & Newton watercolour pencils are the perfect example. There’s a set of 12 or for a few more options, the set of 24 is ideal. These pencils are top quality but also user friendly – no complex mixing skills needed to get those shades!
Sketch pads come in all sizes, right up to big A2 ones. Spiral sketchbooks can be handy as they keep all the sheets together and can be easily slipped into a bag.
Paint sets
There are lots of great sets of paints available which are a great place to start if you’re new to painting, or buying a gift for a friend and you aren’t sure what they need. Sets are a safe bet because they contain the basic colours that artists use to mix to create what they need.
Acrylic paints are popular and a 12 colour set such as the one from Daler Rowney is both beautiful and practical. The paints come in 12 main colours ranging from black through to white.
The travelling artist
We also have a range of products to suit roving artists!
For people that like to go out and about to capture the scenery or visit different places to paint or draw, portfolios and telescopic containers are the safest way to protect canvases and sketch pads during travel. These handy containers also often let you add a few art essentials and are also ideal for students who are taking art classes and need to take the artwork to their tutor.
