The last couple of years have been extremely tough for students. If you’re feeling a little lacking in motivation right now, you’re most definitely not alone.
As the end of January approaches, it’s really important to get your motivation back on track. Perhaps you have a dissertation or thesis you should be working on, or are aware that exams aren’t too far away. It’s time to get organised!

Don’t be afraid to admit you aren’t motivated
It isn’t unusual to be lacking in motivation at this time of year – it affects many people, not just students. But it is important to admit it, even to yourself, so that you can work out how to overcome it.
Accepting your feelings is a good way to break out of any negative patterns, and will help you to overcome the lack of motivation much faster than if you are constantly berating yourself or trying to ignore them.
Make little changes for big results
Once you can accept your situation, try doing something small every day that gets you closer to your goals. This could be anything from spending an hour a day organising your notes, to reading one chapter of your textbook.
If you’re feeling lost and unsure about where to start then it might be helpful to talk with someone about it. Talk to your friends, family or a tutor if you are feeling overwhelmed. They will be able to help you work out the best next step for you.
Understand your studying style
One important way to get into the right mindset for studying is to understand your own study habits better. This means knowing how you work best, what time of day you are most productive, and what methods of learning suit you the most.
If you know yourself better, it will be much easier for you to stick to a routine and get things done. For example, if you know that working in short bursts throughout the day is more effective for you, then try to get into that habit. And if you know that working evenings suits your style better, make sure to plan ahead and build in some flexible time slots for when you should study.
Get your essentials organised
The final tip is to make sure you start the term with everything you need to succeed. If your notes and study space is organised, you won’t waste time when you sit down to work trying to remember what you should be doing.
Notebooks, binders, pencils for art projects, planners, and highlighters all help you to focus on the really important business of studying. Work (and life!) is so much easier when it’s organised and clutter free.
Prepare yourself mentally and get organised with the tools you need to be successful! It’s time to get serious about the year ahead!
