Flyers are effective marketing tools that can provide information about your business or promote a special event. Flyers are so effective because they get straight to the point, are inexpensive to produce, and easily distributed. Flyers have been around for years and are highly effective, even in today’s technologically advanced world.

Creating a flyer is easy but what about creating an effective flyer that fulfils your business needs? Here’s what you need to know.

Start with a clear goal

Flyers are effective when they provide specific information about your business or advertise a specific event. As with all marketing, don’t try to communicate too much. If you confuse or overwhelm your customers, the flyer won’t work.

Before you start to think about design, make sure you’re clear about the message you want to convey. What are the benefits of the product, service or event you’re selling for the customer? What key information do they absolutely need to know?

What makes an effective flyer?

Make sure you include contact details (such as your website, telephone number and address) on the flyer. This will make it easy for people to get in touch with you if they want to find out more about your business services/products or participate in a special event that you are hosting.

Bear in mind that effective flyers provide information quickly and easily. This is accomplished by avoiding lengthy paragraphs or other business jargon. It should be easy to understand, especially for those who are not familiar with your industry. Make it interesting but avoid making it long-winded and complicated.

Use a clear, effective design. This will not only attract the attention of readers but should also keep them interested in reading through the rest of your flyer. People should be able to quickly read what you are offering and understand why it’s so effective, based on what you have written or included in your flyer.

Can using a template help?

Unless you are in a design business, it can be worth using a template to get the flyer basics in place. It’s also important because there are technical things to understand such as bleed lines and margins of safety when printing.

Most applications such as Word and Pages have flyer templates you can use.

When you are working with a template, remember that you need to design in CMYK colour profile as opposed to sRGB. sRGB is fine for digital designs but for print, you’ll need to have the right setting to get the right results.

Finishing touches

Once you have an idea of what to include and how the flyer will look, there are a couple of finishing elements to include:

  • Branding – make sure the business logo features somewhere on the flyer and your branding is consistent across all your marketing so it can easily be recognised and remembered.
  • Call to action – make it clear what customers should do next. ‘Give us a call’ before the phone number, ‘Visit the store’ or even ‘Visit our website’ are all effective calls to action.
